The 2008 Nitro Buggy season is off to a great start and if the level of competition at this early stage is anything to go by the 2008 season will be something not to miss. With the monsoon season upon us, drivers numbers were down but a good strong spectator crowd was on hand to witness some spectacular Nitro dirt action , the rain ravaged circuit wasnt giving up much grip in practice and the early heats, but a nice grippy race line was soon showing through on the hard packed circuit after the first round of racing, which saw Tony Knauth - X1CR - RB on 13 laps take the win 20 seconds ahead of Neil Ingram - MBX5R - RB with Tim Nicol - MBX5R - RB on 12 laps in third. With Tony picking up what was to be the fastest lap of the event on the slippery surface with 33.282 secs. Round 2 was another RB affair with RB engines again filling the top 5 spots, with Neil Ingram taking the win in fine style ahead of junior driver Tom Jones who made some big improvements late last season and is showing great promise for 08 after moving over to an RB powered X1CR, Skip Jackson HN Racing X1CR - RB pushed hard to take third just 8 seconds behind Tom. Round 3 was an awesome battle between the flying Phil Ciccone - MBX5R - OS and Tony Knauth with Phil just taking the win with 13 laps - 8m08.146 and Tony 13 laps 8m08.200, with Tom Jones taking third just over 7 seconds down. Round 4 again had Tony and Phil battling it out for the win with Tony getting away in the end to finish just over 30 seconds ahead of Phil in second and Tom Jones on 12 laps in third. The final round of the night was what young Tom Jones had been working towards taking his first outright win in the Pro Buggy class up against the big guns, Tom took the win ahead of Phil Ciccone by under a second with Tony Knauth securing third place.
The overall scores for the first dirt race of the 2008 season were:
Tony Knauth - X1CR - RB - 12 points
Tom Jones - X1CR - RB - 13 points
Tim Nicol - MBX5R - RB - 20 points
