Newman and Knauth put on an epic battle

Still on a high from a podium finish at the Nitro Challenge 08, Gavin Newman - Xray - Axe Rossi was looking the goods in practice, setting some good lap times on the very rough demanding circuit, Newman didnt disappoint in Round 1 of five getting the holeshot off the start closely followed by Knauth - Xray - RB with Neil Ingram - MBX5R - RB running in third, Newman taking the round win 5.94 seconds ahead of Knauth with Ingram finishing a strong third, Shaun Rawlings - Xray - Force making a big impression in fourth with his pullstart engine with Skip Jackson - HN X1CR - RB rounding out the Top 5. Round 2 saw Skip Jackson take the holeshot with Knauth and John Chau - Kyosho 777 - RB right on his tail but it was Newman and Knauth that broke through to fight it out for the lead with Newman's Xray again taking the win 7.93 seconds ahead of Knauth with Gary Bui - Xray - Maxpower pushing hard for third ahead of Rawlings and Jackson. Round 3, with over 5000 laps being put down on the circuit now over the last 2 events certain areas were getting very rough making it very challenging. Round 3 was run in the opposite direction adding a bit extra challenge for the drivers. Knauth pulled off a big holeshot with Neil Ingram and Gary Bui in tow, Newman getting caught up on the first few laps had it all to do to catch up, making a big effort to pull back the feild Newman worked his way through the pack back into second place 7 seconds ahead of Ingram with Knauth putting lap on the field to finish in the top spot, Gary Bui, Tam Bui - Xray - RB and Henry Bui - Xray OS rounding out the Top 6, Tom Jones - X1CR - RB, Andrew Hutton - Xray - OS, Shaun Rawlings and Shaun Stewart - Hobao - OS filling the lower places in the Top 10, Andrew Hutton having his best finish ever driving his new 808. Round 4 with just 1 point seperating the top 2 drivers Gavin Newman and Tony Knauth going into this round, Knauth had it all to do to ensure Newman didnt get away with only 1 round left, Ingram, Newman and Knauth got a big jump on the field on the first lap, but Newman getting caught up on lap 2 and 3 dropped more than 10 seconds to the lead pair. Ingram and Knauth running together at the front for few laps until a couple of small mistakes from Ingram let the leader get away, Newman again showing his talent under pressure pushed hard to again come back through the field to take second from Ingram on the last lap, Knauth again took the win a lap ahead, Newman second Ingram third Gary Bui settling for fourth again with Skip Jackson taking the number 5 spot. Round 5, the final round of the night see's Newman and Knauth on equal points with Newman just in front on time 4.114 seconds ahead. The pressure was on Knauth to finally get his new 808 on the podium having struggled with setup since changing over from his NT Championship winning HN X1CR package and what a race it was, with Knauth getting the holeshot and putting about 10 seconds on the field on the first lap with Gary and Tam Bui in hot pursuit, but with the Bui's both getting caught up in traffic on laps 2 and 3 it was Newman and Ingram pushing through into second and third, Knauth out in front running a careful race in the rough conditions, with the race commentator calling out the splits between one and two, Newman would pull a couple of seconds out of the leader to get within about 5 seconds only to have Knauth respond and take a couple back, with the 2 drivers pushing hard, lapped traffic was coming into play but with the lapped drivers showing a good deal of race etiquette allowing racing room for the front runners, the 2 got through cleanly to put a lap on the whole field. It was Knauth though that took the win after a gruelling 13 laps finishing 8.05 seconds ahead of Newman, with Neil Ingram in third, Gary, Henry and Tam Bui fourth, fifth and sixth, with Kyle Hodges, Tom Jones, Shaun Rawlings and John Chau rounding out the Top Ten.
