2009 OCR Nitro Champs Series Rnd # 4
Henry Bui shows how it's Done !!!!
Junior buggy driver Henry Bui had the event of his life, taking home 2 class podiums and moving onto the outright series podium as well. Henry, who is no stranger to the podium in the Junior buggy class, put on a spectacular show of talent to take 3rd outright, well done Henry !!! The drivers at OCR had been a bit spoiled over the last 6 months with a circuit that had been treated with a PVA compound that gave up some outrageous traction, only to have a layer a of slippery sand covering the circuit from the rains earlier this week, this slowed the laptimes by an average of 2 to 3 seconds, but did nothing to dampen the quality of racing with some fantastic close hard and fast action going on all night!!!
Now on to the racing!!! Round 1 saw Skip Jackson - MBX6 pull off the holeshot ahead of Phil Ciccone - MBX, Tam Bui - 808 and Tony Knauth - Hyper 9, the 4 drivers battling hard all race with Jackson coming out on top taking the win just 1.66 secs ahead of Knauth and Henry Bui - 808 getting up into the battle about halfway through to relegate Tam and Ciccone to 4th and 5th respectively. Bui and Knauth both running in the 33 second bracket.
Round 2 again saw Jackson take the holeshot with a 4 second jump on the field, with Sergio Manalvo - MBX6 and Tam Bui close behind. This race was awesome with the very vocal crowd of spectators urging the drivers on, a huge battle ensued at the front between Jackson and Knauth, with both drivers showing some real talent swapping the lead corner after corner with some very very close wheel to wheel action, in the end the pair finishing just 1.52 seconds apart, Jackson with the win, Knauth second, Tom Jones - 808 up for 3rd, Tam Bui 4th and Henry Bui coming home in 5th.
Round 3 run in the opposite direction saw Ciccone - MBX6 rise to the occasion to take the win 1 lap ahead of the field, Jones pushing his Xray hard to come home second, another Xray third with Henry Bui, Knauth 4th after flaming out on the last lap and Kyle Hodges - X2CR making a show of it to come home in 5th, Tam Bui, Ken Gilchrist - RC8B, Dean Baker, Mark Sinclair - 808 and Jackson rounding out the Top Ten.
Round 4 had Sergio Manalvo on fire picking up the FTD for the night and the fastest lap, Sergio the only driver to pull 14 laps and break into the 32 second bracket with a 32.896, Jackson pushed hard for second ahead of Knauth and Hodges, with Ciccone home in 5th.
Round 5 the final of the night saw Ciccone take the holeshot ahead of Jackson and Manalvo with Gilchrist right on their tail, with Knauth unusually missing the start lights to end up at the back early on, Manalvo, Jackson and Ciccone battled hard at the front, with Knauth coming back through the field, to overtake Ciccone at the halfway point to get into third, with Jackson coming to grief on lap 11, Manalvo ran away with it to take the win, Knauth pushed hard in the final laps to get within 3.53 seconds for second place, with Hodges 13 seconds down in third Ciccone hanging on for 4th, Tom Jones fifth.
With only 3 rounds left in the series of 7, and 2 rounds to be dropped at the end, things are really starting to hot up in all 3 classes, with Knauth on top of the Pro Buggy leaderboard, Shaun Rawlings into second, Henry Bui up into third, Henry also leading the Junior Buggy class ahead of Tom Jones and Samantha Coffee. Henri Raafs has a big lead over Mark Sinclair in the Sports Buggy class and Rory O'Connor in third. The scoreboard is a little deceptive at this point and will really close up tight after round 7 when the first of the dropped rounds are implemented.
